A Glimpse into the Heart of Medieval Illumination: The Très Riches Heures in Chantilly

From June 7 to October 5, 2025, the Château de Chantilly – Institut de France will dedicate a major exhibition to one of the most precious manuscripts in the world: The Très Riches Heures of the Duke of Berry. Created by the Limbourg brothers between 1412 and 1416, this illuminated Book of Hours is regarded as one of the greatest artistic achievements of the Middle Ages.

The Exhibition: Magnificent – Rare – Immersive

At the heart of the exhibition is the original manuscript, with its iconic miniatures. For the first time, visitors will be offered an unprecedented encounter with the work:

  • 26 calendar pages, meticulously restored, will be displayed with both front and reverse sides visible
  • A double-page spread of the bound manuscript will be turned every two weeks – a rare and precious glimpse into the whole codex

The exhibition brings together all surviving Books of Hours once owned by the Duke, reunited from collections in Paris, Brussels, New York, and Chantilly.

Interactive displays, digital access, and exceptional loans – such as the Duke’s funerary effigy from Bourges Cathedral and manuscripts from the Bibliothèque nationale de France – transform the show into a multimedia experience of the highest caliber.

A notable highlight: a tactile 3D reproduction of the September miniature enables blind and visually impaired visitors to experience the work through touch – a groundbreaking approach in manuscript exhibitions.
